AMNESIA OF THE SOUL
Short Film
As Director of Photography on Amnesia of the Soul, my role was to visualise the protagonist Kyle’s deteriorating psychological state through motivated cinematographic decisions. Working closely with the Director, the film adopts a subjective visual language, using framing, lens choice, and lighting to externalise PTSD, dissociation, and emotional withdrawal. Wide lenses combined with shallow depth of field were used throughout to reflect Kyle’s fragmented perception of reality. The 24mm Xeen Prime lens allowed environments to remain present within the frame while softened peripheries and selective focus visually separated Kyle from his surroundings, reinforcing his psychological isolation
Lighting design prioritised character psychology over realism. Low-key, diffused setups and motivated practical sources created subdued domestic spaces, while flashback sequences used warmer colour temperatures, haze, and softened contrast to distinguish memory from present reality. The Mindscape therapy scenes further departed from realism through directional lighting and contrasting colour temperatures, visually isolating Kyle and encouraging ambiguity around the treatment’s reliability
This project was my final film production after returning to university following a year’s deferral, marking the conclusion of my undergraduate studies. Amnesia of the Soul was awarded University of Salford Film of the Year and Best Cinematography, serving as a culmination of my technical development and my university career
