gaffer / 1st AC
April 2023
In a bureaucratic dystopia where language is weaponised to control the population, a woman receives a government order to become pregnant — and begins to quietly rebel.
The visual goal was to create a sterile, joyless atmosphere that contrasted sharply with the omnipresent Orwellian propaganda suppressing self-expression.
On this project, I collaborated closely with Director of Photography Louie Clark to explore how lighting could be used to draw focus to key visual elements — from the actors and colour tones of the environment to the most significant aspects of set design and props.
As 1st AC:
• Ensured consistent sharp focus using the Tilta Nucleus M across dynamic movement sequences.
• Supported RED Komodo setup and maintained dolly/grip systems for smooth camera execution.
• Assisted the camera operator on complex shots, coordinating timing and movement with the grip and lighting teams.
• Managed rapid lens swaps, filtration, and camera accessories to keep pace with changing setups.
As Gaffer:
• Delivered responsive lighting setups aligned with the DP’s creative direction.
• Led a small lighting crew and coordinated power distribution efficiently across multiple locations.
• Rigged and adjusted lights to create the intended washed-out, desaturated tone.
• Maintained lighting continuity and adapted quickly to last-minute scene changes.
